Frequently asked questions

Since we started this project 4 years ago, I have been interacting day after day with many customers and getting to hear their feedback and inquiries.

We have built a set of questions I have been asked the most and I am hoping this will help you.

If after reading this section you have any other questions or if you just want to talk, feel free to contact us.

1.     What is free-from?

The term free-from is used to list any allergen that it is NOT included in certain product. In Vida’s case, we are a free-from diary, egg and gluten bakery. This means there is no dairy (derived) products, no egg and no gluten or wheat in any of our products

2.     Wait no egg, no gluten, no dairy… What are your cakes made of?

Exactly the same ingredients used in traditional baking! But we substitute them with free-from or plant-based alternatives. In the case of dairy, we use alternatives such as soy/rice/coconut milk, sunflower oil and veggie fats. And to substitute gluten/wheat we use other starches found in potatoes, rice and maize.

3.     Why?

We realise a piece of cake can be found pretty much everywhere. But what happens if you can have NONE of the ingredients used in traditional baking? Does that mean you have to skip your birthday cake? Or the scone with your tea? This is why we do what we do, we want to cater to everyone who cannot find a cake that easily.

4.     What’s the taste like?

We have put a lot of effort into our recipes and since the beginning our premise was: substituting ingredients never ever means compromising on flavour and texture. We encourage you to try them and let us know what you think.

5.     Are you products vegan?

Yes, all our products. We are a pro-vegan business, so we also make sure the ingredients we use are cruelty-free and are as sustainable as possible.

6.     How much are your cakes?

Unlike other bakeries, we do not do standardised cakes, we specialise in customised cakes. This is why prices depend on size and decoration. Therefore, the simpler the cake the less will it cost. On the other hand, if you want a more complex cake this will put its price up.

 7.     How long will your products last?

We encourage customers to eat them on the day they collect them or got them delivered, so the freshness and quality will be 100% guaranteed. However, we understand we all love some leftovers. If this is the case, please keep them sealed with as little access to air as possible (it will help with preserving the smoothness and it will avoid the cake from getting dry). Do not put it in the fridge unless it is a very warm day.

8.     What are the main sizes of your cakes?

We have 6, 8, 10 and 12-inch cakes. We do not use Kg or Pound to specify the sizes of our cakes.

9.     How big is that? I mean, can I order a 6 inch cake for 12 people?

Just so you get an idea, the latest apple phone measurement is 6 inches, that will be the diameter of your cake if you decide to go for that size. Now, if you want to feed 12 people out of that cake you might cut it really thinly, leave some people without cake or get a bigger one.

10.  Then, how big does my cake has to be to feed 12 people?

This is really up to the person who cut it. But in our cake section we have included a sizing guidance. Please bear in mind this is only for guidance purpose.

11.  How can I collect my cake?

You just have to come to our shop and have a free drink while we pack your order! The address is: 139 Brick Lane, E1 6SB, London, United Kingdom. (Check for opening times)

12.  Do you do deliveries?

Not yet. If you cannot come and collect your order you can arrange a private courier. Please refer to the terms and conditions page for more information about this.

13.  How long in advance should I order?

The sooner the better, especially if your order is for a weekend, for a bank/national holiday, is more than 1 tier cake, or any other big occasion.

14.  Last minute orders?

We don’t encourage you to wait until the last time, but during weekdays we are more likely to take such orders. Contact us directly to know our availability for last minute orders.

15.  Are your products nut-free?

We do not use nuts in most of our products, but we handle nuts in the kitchen, specifically: peanuts, walnuts and pecans. We wouldn’t recommend you ordering from us if you have a severe allergy to any nuts.

16.  What does Vida mean?

Vida means life in Spanish. We choose the name because it pretty much reflects our brand and ethos of celebrating life and adding colour to your everyday!
